A 3 Phase Project
We are very excited to continue our work with this client! Located in Kansas, they specialize in storing and transloading agricultural products–they store products for Tyson, Cargill, Interra International, and more. We’ve recently completed Phase 3 for their ammonia refrigeration facility. Our team has worked hard to engineer, manufacture, and install three unique phases to meet this particular customer’s diverse refrigeration needs.
Innovative started working with the client back in 2016. The project is split into four phases, with each phase in the project designed for a specific type of refrigeration capability.
Phase 1 has the means to slow-freeze 480,000 pounds of product over 72 hours and blast-freeze 96,000 pounds of product in 24 hours; the Phase 2 expansion can slow-freeze an additional 480,000 pounds of product in 72 hours, a total of 960,000 lbs. Phases 1 and 2 have been completed and operational since May 2017 and March 2018, respectively.
Phase 3 was awarded to us in December 2017 with architect GMA and general contractor ARCO National Construction. After winning the project, we were out within two weeks running underfloor glycol. This was less than six months from the time Phase 1 was completed!
Phases 3 & 4, known locally as ColdPoint West, have their own mechanical room separate from Phases 1 & 2. The different sections of the facility have their own PLCs and their own interactive screens with remote accessibility. With the advanced controls, the client can see and monitor everything remotely.
For Phase 3, we manufactured a custom, state-of-the-art water treatment skid here at Innovative. This was a first for us, and it was a very exciting challenge! It has two water evaporators which boil off blow-down water. This system, in combination with a proprietary water treatment solution, allows the customer to achieve true zero blowdown and save thousands on their water bill.
Innovative designed and built six convertible mini-penthouses, which have dual-valve stations that are tied to both the low-temp and medium-temperature vessels. This setup gives the customer the flexibility to switch from a cooler to a freezer simply by adjusting a few valves on each penthouse. The variety of cooling options enables the client to store a large diversity of items, depending on which clients might be leasing from them at any given time.
Our construction team pushed through the extreme Kansas summer temperatures to finish up Phase 3 of the project quickly and efficiently. With everyone’s hard work, we were able to get the facility to temperature a day before the deadline. Great job to everyone involved!
We look forward to beginning Phase 4 soon!
